What Is an Oni?
An oni is a supernatural being from Japanese folklore, often described as a powerful ogre-like creature with horns, sharp teeth, and great strength. In traditional stories and art, oni are sometimes shown carrying a heavy iron club called a kanabo.
Oni can appear in many different roles in Japanese folklore, from frightening creatures to more humorous or familiar characters. They are also closely associated with Setsubun, a traditional Japanese seasonal event when people throw roasted soybeans while saying “Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi,” meaning “Demons out, good fortune in.”
Today, oni are also commonly portrayed in cute and playful ways. The oni in these coloring pages is a cheerful chibi version inspired by this well-known figure from Japanese folklore.
